with a Women's Studies Major

Beginning Fall 2008, Appalachian State University will offer a B.A. in Women's Studies, pending approval from the UNC General Administration. The Women's Studies program will no longer be a part of Interdisciplinary Studies, but will become a part of the the new University College. Students who began their course of study in IDS with a concentration in Women's Studies as described below will, of course, be able to finish that program.

A student may earn a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) with a concentration in Women's Studies. By means of a woman-centered interdisciplinary and cross-cultural analysis, this concentration seeks to rectify the omission of women from traditional university curricula. The goal is to broaden student knowledge about women in history, society, literature and culture. Both historic and contemporary materials are used and a variety of methodologies -- both theoretical and practical -- are employed.

A Women's Studies Major Concentration in IDS must include the following:

  • SOC 2850 Gender and Society or IDS 2420 or IDS 2421 Intro to Women's Studies - Social Sciences or Humanities

  • One Women's History course (such as HIST 3422 Women in History or HIST 3530 Selected Topics in Women's History)

  • One theory course: IDS 3530* Feminist Theories, P&R 3530* Feminist Philosophy;or PS3530* Feminist Political Theory

  • 15 semester hours from the Women's Studies offerings (which vary each semester) with at least one course from the humanities and one from social sciences.
