Women's Studies:

An academic discipline grounded in the activist
women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Women's Studies Program at Appalachian State University was founded in 1976 -- making it the second oldest program in the state of North Carolina. The Women's Studies Program provides academic leadership to the Appalachian State University community for the study of women, women's issues, and gender, feminist, and womanist theories. This leadership finds expression both in the classroom as well as in a variety of other venues. In order to accomplish this mission, the program offers: a new approach to traditional academic disciplines by incorporating the study and contributions of women; an interdisciplinary model of scholarship constructed around women's and gender issues, as well as gender, feminist, and womanist theories; an open atmosphere for the exchange of ideas and expression of concern over a wide range of women's issues on our campus and in our society.
